Saturday, February 6, 9 am - 1 pm

Volunteers are invited to come on this day or at any other time during the month. There are a lot of projects underway while preparing for the upcoming Osesshin. Come on over and pitch in! A vegetarian lunch will be served.

Full Day of Practice

There will be no Full Day of Practice this month, due to Osesshin.

Mini-Sesshin

There will be no Mini-Sesshin this month, due to Osesshin.

Winter Osesshin

February 16 - 23

The February Osesshin with Shodo Harada Roshi is scheduled to begin February 16. This Osesshin is full and has a wait list. Kosesshin is scheduled for February 24, 25 and 26, and the Kosesshin is also completely full.

As usual, the Monastery will be sequestered during the Osesshin. Zazenkai will not meet on Sunday February 21. The Roshi's Teisho - daily dharma talks during Osesshin - are always open to anyone who would like to attend. Teisho usually begins at 1:00 pm in the Zendo. Please plan to arrive at least 15 minutes early.

Please check with Head Monk Soryu about ways you can help with the preparations for this retreat. As ever, the success of the Osesshin relies on the support of the entire Sangha. There are many creative ways you can help. We will need sarei/tea sweets for the seven nights of Osesshin. Sixty pieces will be needed each evening. Gluten-free sweets are especially welcome (and labeled appropriately), to accommodate participants with celiac disease. Please contact Myosho, boronart@mindspring.com if you would like to help by making tea sweets. Also, fresh fruits and vegetables are most welcome for Osesshin. They may be dropped off at the Monastery at any time. The kitchen will welcome all contributions of staples and fresh vegetables and fruits.

We offer many thanks to all the Sangha for the continued support of these efforts.

Kosesshin

Wenesday, February 24 through Friday, February 26

Inquiries Invited, Enso House

Because Enso House's nurse is taking a one-year sabbatical starting in July of 2010, there is an opportunity for an interested and qualified person to become a temporary member of the Enso House team, and to experience being part of a seamless practice of tending to the whole person as each Enso House patient prepares to die. Responsibilities include taking regular shifts of bedside care, helping to prepare meals, and participating in the general activity of a small, spiritually-oriented, care-giving endeavor. The benefits provided include room, board, accident insurance, and a small monthly stipend. Medical malpractice insurance is not necessary, nor is a Washington State license. If interested, please contact Ann Cutcher, MD, director@ensohouse.org

Caregiver Retreats

The 2010 Caregiver Retreats will be held at Tahoma Monastery from 9:30 am to 3 pm on the following Saturdays: March 20, May 15, July 17, and October 16. The retreats are intended to give professional and non-professional caregivers a chance to relax and recharge. There is no fee, but donations are welcome. If you would like to receive more information or a registration reminder and are not already on the caregiver retreat email tree, please call 360. 331.4699 or email: caregiver_retreat@hotmail.com.

Letter From Daichi

Dear Friends,

To celebrate this year, Shodo Harada's seventieth birthday year, we are sharing news of this long- awaited moment:At the beginning of 2011 the Roshi will be formally installed as abbot at Tahoma Zen Monastery. He will then be in residence at Tahoma Monastery.

We will need to remodel/expand his current house to be suitable and comfortable as a permanent place to live, not just to visit, and the Roshi is already working with the people who built his house ten years ago in celebration of his sixtieth birthday. With their ideas and his wishes and needs, plans have been created and the remodeling process is now getting started. Ideally, we could have his home ready for his arrival, or even better, for his birthday this Autumn.

Naturally, we need to support these plans with the funds to build it. If you would like to make a donation for the Roshi's remodeled home as your 70th birthday present to him, that would be very welcome -- even a small donation, not necessarily a birthday gift, or maybe a donation aimed at a certain purpose such as a bookshelf or a needed piece of furniture. This is what we need to gather, now that we have the plans!

Any checks for donations should be written to: One Drop Zendo Association and mailed to Tahoma Monastery,6499 Wahl Road, Freeland, WA 98249, attention: Dairin.

We really look forward to doing this as a Sangha offering to the Roshi in gratitude for all of his efforts up through today, and from now onward.

If you have any further questions you can email me: chisantahoma@gmail.com

Glad to be seeing so many of you soon at Tahoma Monastery Sesshin too!

Thank you,
Love,
Gassho,
Daichi
